While researching we found this a little bit of a roadblock, as you go through and try to review a function. A nice little menu with *Upgrade and a video about the feature appear. For power users, this will be annoying or a strong push to jump straight to the Business plan!
The layout is nice and simple and you can customise your dashboard with focus areas, go to notifications and alerts which are useful and browse the main areas of MeisterTask.

MeisterTask has this set as default with Open, In Progress and Done as the sections.
You can delete the project default and set up your own sections. On projects we manage with Kanban, often we will set up sections from a traditional perspective like Requirements, Design, Build, Testing, Implementation. Then seeing tasks remaining in sections allows you to visualise how they flow through the process.
The development side of MeisterTask appears strong and professional, something we like to see with solutions like this.
The API is well documented and available on all plans. However, you need to be mindful of what plan you are on, as the API won’t give you access to paid plan fields like groups or custom fields. We think this is fair and a good approach.
This tool has a professional and well-designed feel. It might not be at the same enterprise-level as Citrix or Asana. But what it does offer is a comparable feature set, equal professionalism and a product we think many users both non-techy and techy would enjoy using.
Via the app, you can enable a 7-day trial linked to your Google or Apple Pay account. This is a great way to access the full features for 7 days to trial. Just remember to cancel if you don’t need it!. The app also supports offline use and worked with no warnings or issues.

MeisterTask has the following user interface customizations:
You can go into preferences and choose Compact UI to have a more compact menu system.
Options also allow you to enable animations, fade old and inactive tasks and adjust the width of the section columns.
For the section columns, the options of Small, Medium and Large are available to select.
For task-specific layouts, you can choose to show thumbnail images within the task boards. You can also choose to show a full task description, first lines of description or no description at all..thus just showing the task title only.
These modifications give users some control, and the overall experience is contained within the MeisterTask user interface. We often think this approach is better as it keeps all users following the same look and feel of a product.
MeisterTask has the following workflow customizations:
Automations are available with the Pro plan and above. You can trigger actions to occur when a task is created or moved into a project section.
To set up automation, you simply click on the section header. Choose the section options icon, and from within the pop-up menu, you can select Automations. From there click Add Automation.

You can also schedule tasks from Business Plan and up. These tasks will appear on the Timeline and help to visualise what tasks are upcoming. This is a Business plan option as well.
MeisterTask has the following report customizations:
With the use of Quick Reports, MeisterTask offers options to quickly see all open tasks, recently created tasks, all completed tasks, recently completed tasks and all due tasks.
With the Business plan, you are also able to export as CSV and XLS from within the reports area directly. We have seen with some other tools like Nifty PM, where they allow all users to export data of reports for all users. And other tools like Wrike charge to the BI Export API to allow data to export. So it does vary between tools.
However, within MeisterTask preferences, there is an export option for all users to export all personal data, including projects, task attachments and time tracking. This is a GDPR requirement, and you may find this free export will give you some data to manipulate yourself.
